A Study on the Prevalence of Vitamin K Deficiency of Newborns with PIVKAL & Hepaplastin Tests and the Effect after Administration of Vitamin K

Abstract
The Prevalence of Vitamin K deficiency in newborns was studied from June 1989 to July 1989.
PIVKA-¥±(protein induced vitamin K abscence) is abnormal decarboxylated prothrombin which is present in vitamin K deficiency.
We gave PIVKAL test in order to detect PIVKA-¥± and tried Hepaplastin test to evaluate coagulation activity.
We obtained umbilical plasma from thirty normal full term newborns, and also obtained venous plasma from them three days after vitamin K administration.
Following are the results of the tests.
1. PIVKA-¥± was found in the cord blood of nine and was disappeared in the venous blood.
2. Abnormally low values of HPT(<30%) with PIVKA-¥±£« were five normal values of HPT (>30%) with PIVKA-¥±£« were four, low values of HPT with PIVKA-¥±- were eight, and normal values of HPT with PIVKA-¥±- were thirteen.
3. The mean values¡¾SD of HPT with PIVKA-¥±£« group were 27.56¡¾10.85, and 31.37¡¾12.28 with PIVKA-¥±- group from cord blood. The mean values¡¾SD of HPT with PIVKA-¥±£« group were 53.78¡¾14.96 and 55.86¡¾17.48 with PIVKA- group from venous blood.
4. The mean value of differences between cord blood and venous blood from HPT among all the newborns were 25.1¡¾17.88, 26.2¡¾5.93 among PIVKA-¥±£«newborns, and 24.49¡¾19.00 among PIVKA-¥±- newborns. There was no significant statistical difference among three groups.
